The USD family lost one of its own with the recent news that former men's basketball player, Sam Luke, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on January 10th, leaving behind his wife Miranda and four children - Miller, Macklin, Larkin and Landis. A 1998 graduate of USD, Sam played one season for the Toreros as a walk-on his senior year (1997-98). He appeared in 12 games with 3 starts for the 14-14 Toreros.
A decorated veteran and Captain in the United States Army who served two tours in Iraq, and an active officer in the National Guard, the 34-year-old Luke had been living in the state of Arkansas with his family. Sam's wife Miranda said that Luke's year with the Torero basketball team was truly A Dream Come True.
Although Luke spent just one season on the Torero roster, he was at USD for three years (1995-98). He started out his collegiate experience at Gonzaga University in 1993-94 as a redshirt walk-on. During the 1994-95 season he played at Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington.
He prepped at North Kitsap High School where he was a two-year varsity starter. During his senior year (1992-93) he averaged 12.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg and was named 2nd Team All-Olympic League.
