Muscle Milk Student Athlete of the Week

The Toreros volleyball team has been named the USD Muscle Milk Student Athletes of the Week for the week of December 9th to December 15th. The Toreros capped off one of the most successful seasons in school and program history with an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament this past weekend. It marked the third time in program history the Toreros have reached the Sweet Sixteen.

The Toreros finished their historic season at 26-4 in a year packed with milestone events. After starting the season unranked, the team garnered national attention and shot up the rankings after a fast start that included upsetting three ranked teams in their first five games and nearly upsetting the defending national champion Texas Longhorns. The Toreros then returned home for their home opener and brought the house down by upsetting then #1 ranked USC to become the first USD volleyball team to upset a #1 ranked opponent.

The victory allowed the Toreros to achieve even more history as it helped launch them all the way to #2 in the national rankings. It marked the highest national ranking by any USD sport in school history. The Toreros would take that momentum into conference play going 16-2 in the West Coast Conference. They defeated BYU in front of a record home crowd in the final game of the regular season to win the West Coast Conference Championship. Chloe Ferrari was named the WCC Player of the Year and Jennifer Petrie was named the WCC Coach of the Year. Ferrari, Alaysia Brown, and Katie Hoekman would earn All-WCC First Team honors while C'era Oliveira was named All-WCC Honorable Mention. Hunter Jennings was named to the WCC All-Freshman Team.

The success during the regular season earned the Toreros the #9 national seed in the NCAA Tournament and allowed them to host their first and second round tournament games. The Toreros dominated both matches sweeping UC Santa Barbara and Arizona to reach the Sweet Sixteen. The team played valiantly but would fall to Nebraska in the Sweet Sixteen to complete their season and snap a near-school record 17 match winning streak.

Congratulations to the volleyball on a historic season!
