PORTLAND, Ore. — San Diego baseball (19-11, 7-5 WCC) took game one of its doubleheader at Portland (19-12, 6-6 WCC) and led in the ninth inning of game two but could not hang on to secure the series win at Joe Eztel Field on Saturday, falling to the Pilots 5-4 in 10 innings in game two after beating Portland 8-6 in game one.
GAME ONE: San Diego 8, Portland 6
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pilots got on the board first, jumping out to an early lead in the bottom of the first frame with an RBI single.
- San Diego struck back with a pair of runs in the top of the second, taking a 2-1 lead after redshirt sophomore outfielder Camden Vasquez drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home sophomore utility player Jack Costello and junior shortstop Cody Jefferis plated sophomore infielder Will Worthington with a sacrifice fly.
- The Toreros expanded their lead in the top of the fifth, adding a pair of runs to make it 5-1 when sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) doubled down the left field line to bring home fellow sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth and Ricketts launched an opposite-field home to left field that scored Sim.
- Portland responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth via a pair of doubles and a home run, but USD immediately answered in the top of the seventh, storming back to retake the lead for good with an RBI single from Ricketts that brought in sophomore centerfielder Dustin Allen and a clutch, pinch-hit, two-RBI single from graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro that plated both Ricketts and Sim.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Sophomore left-hander Brycen Mautz started the game on the mound for the Toreros and struck out nine batters for the second consecutive outing.
- Redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson threw a scoreless frame across the sixth and seventh innings, earning his third win of the season without striking out or walking a batter.
- Graduate lefty Ian Churchill finished the game on the mound with 2.1 run-free frames, earning his first save of the season as he worked around two hits and a walk with four strikeouts to secure the win.
- Costello led the Toreros with three hits as he went 3-for-5 in the game with a run scored, followed by Teijeiro (2-for-2, 2 RBIs), Meidroth (2-for-5, 2B, R), and Ricketts (2-for-5, 3 RBIs, 2 R, HR).
- Ricketts' three RBIs and two runs scored included his sixth home run, which marked the third consecutive game that the Newport Beach, California native had gone yard.
GAME TWO: Portland 5, San Diego 4 (10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Portland got on the board first in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to make it 1-0, then added on in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
- San Diego answered back in the top of the seventh to get within one, plating a pair of runs when Jefferis doubled to center field to score Teijeiro, and junior utility player Max Jung-Goldberg singled to right field to bring home Jefferis.
- Teijeiro then tied things at three runs apiece in the top of the eighth with a clutch RBI single, bringing home junior catcher Caleb Ricketts.
- Meidroth pushed San Diego ahead an inning later, and the Toreros had their first lead of the evening at 4-3.
- Portland rallied to tie it in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch, then plated another run for the win in the bottom of the tenth on a throwing error, beating USD 5-4 in extra innings to take the series.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Teijeiro led the way for the Toreros at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance, finishing a home run shy of the cycle as he singled, doubled twice, tripled, scored a run, and drove in a run on Saturday.
- Meidroth was just behind him with a 3-for-5 night, driving in a single run on Saturday.
- Redshirt freshman Kyle Carr tossed 2.0 scoreless innings on the mound to begin the game in what marked his second career start, striking out the side in the bottom of the first enroute to four total strikeouts.
- Redshirt sophomore James Sashin threw 2.2 scoreless frames on Sunday, followed by sophomore Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy), who threw 0.1.
