Toreros Stun Vanderbilt in Regional Opener

San Diego baseball beats Commodores 3-2 at Goss Stadium as part of Corvallis Regional

CORVALLIS, Ore. — A dominant performance from sophomore left-handed pitcher Brycen Mautz led San Diego baseball (37-18, 17-10 WCC) to a statement win on Friday afternoon, pushing the Toreros past perennial powerhouse Vanderbilt (36-22, 14-16 SEC) by a 3-2 margin at Goss Stadium to kick off the NCAA Corvallis Regional.

The victory marked USD's first in a regional since 2013, when the Kris Bryant-led Toreros beat Cal Poly 8-5 at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium.

EARLY RUNS GET IT DONE
  • Junior catcher Caleb Ricketts got the scoring started in the top of the first, driving in junior shortstop Cody Jefferis (who reached after being hit by the first pitch of the game) with an RBI grounder to give USD a 1-0 advantage.
  • Ricketts got it done again in the top of the third, doubling the San Diego lead to make it 2-0 with an RBI single back up the middle that scored sophomore centerfielder Dustin Allen.
  • An inning later, redshirt sophomore outfielder Camden Vasquez made it 3-0, bringing in sophomore utility player Jack Costello with an RBI grounder.
  • Vanderbilt struck back with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the seventh and the bottom of the eighth but would get no closer.
MAUTZ QUIETS VANDERBILT OFFENSE
  • Local lefty Brycen Mautz (Westview High School) started the game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in one of the best performances of his young career, tossing seven innings of one-run ball while scattering four hits, walking just one, and striking out five en-route to his team-best 10th win of the season.
  • He was relieved in the eighth by redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson, who surrendered a run on a hit but rebounded with a pair of strikeouts to limit the damage.
  • Graduate left-hander Ian Churchill closed the game out with a scoreless ninth, working around a leadoff walk and an intentional walk to strand the game's tying run on second base and earn his fourth save of 2022.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Allen led the Toreros with two hits on Friday, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
  • Ricketts drove in a game-high two, going 1-for-4 with a single.
  • Both Costello and Jefferis went 1-for-4 with a run scored, and Costello notched a double.
