March 31, 2009
Over the weekend, the 2008-2009 Torero Spirit Team competed in the USA Collegiate Nationals for Dance in Anaheim, CA. Over 50 different schools from around the country competed to be named some of the best in collegiate dance. Schools such with strong dance programs, such as Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, UCLA, USC, Idaho State, University of Oregon, and many more, proved to be tough competitors.
Yet, after advancing to finals, with a score of 89 out of 100, beating the average score for the hip hop division, USD came out strong. With 13 hip hop teams in the division, everyone had to be flawless, and the Torero Spirit Team was exactly that! Only 1 point separated first and fifth place, demonstrating just how tight the scoring was, but after all was said and done, the Spirit Team placed third, missing first place by only tenths of point!
Becoming top three in the nation, for dance, is a first for the Torero Spirit Team, putting USD athletics on the map for dance. It was a perfect ending to a successful season for the team, and they look forward to competing again next year!
