USD Spirit Team
Nov. 28, 2012
Did you know that USD has a spirit team? While USD might not be known for its school spirit, don't tell that to these women. After a grueling tryout in early spring of last year in which over 30 women applied, only 15 remained. Those 15 women make up the roster of the Torero Spirit Team for the 2012-2013 season, according to the USD sports' homepage. According to the Spirit Team's homepage, the tryouts include "dance, cheer and technique portions, in which participants are taught a four eight count hip-hop and jazz combo routine, across the floor technique combinations and a cheer and chant." Raising the sometimes dormant school spirit at USD may be a tough task, as Sophomore Kelsey Engelhardt knows, but these women will be doing their best to get us riled and ready for the upcoming fall season. "Our role is to increase school spirit, encourage people to support our [school] and the community, as well as providing entertainment," said Engelhardt. These women look to follow in a long line of talented spirit team members as part of a nationally ranked unit that is experienced in the art of spirit raising. Lead by Coach Amy Bodnar, these women will look to inspire not just the USD community's involvement, but the local community as well.
