USD Preps for First Road Trip of the Season

USD will play at SDSU Tuesday, then travel for 3-game series at Texas.

Junior (2006): Played in and started all 58 games...hit .314 with 75 hits, a team-leading 18 doubles, had the team-lead in home runs with eight and led the team in RBI with 58...had 28 multi-hits games and 13 multi-RBI games...went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI against Kansas (2/18/06)...went 3-for-5 with one double and three RBI against Portland (4/8/06)...went 3-for-5 with one double, one home run and four RBI against San Francisco (4/30/06)...tied the single-game home run's hit record at USD with three in the NCAA Regionals win against Saint Louis (6/3/06)...went 5-for-5 with three home runs, one double and eight RBI in a win against Saint Louis (6/3/06)...was drafted in the 39th round of the 2005 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox.

Sophomore (2005): Named a 2005 pre-season All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper... Also tabbed as the No. 23 overall pro prospect among all college sophomores in Baseball America's list of `Fab 50' players by class.... Named a candidate for the 2005 Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate catcher... Led all Torero players with 10 homeruns and 113 total bases... Also tied for the team-lead in RBIs (42)... Had 18 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI outings, helping USD win 30 games in 2005... Started in every game (58), 33 as the catcher and 25 as the DH, routinely used as the DH on Saturdays... A mainstay in the heart of the Torero batting order, hitting 3rd or 4th in 55 of USD's 58 games... Began the season hitting safely in 9 of USD's first 10 games, batting .410 (16-for-39)... Homered twice in San Diego's season-opening series with Cal Poly SLO (Jan. 21-23)... Batting left-handed Abruzzo hit a towering solo homerun over the right field wall vs. Evansville (2-25-05) in College Station, Texas, helping USD win team championship honors at the 2005 Aggie Baseball Classic... Hit safely in 6-of-7 games in early March, including going 2-for-4 with three RBIs in a series deciding victory over San Diego State (3-13-05)... Homered in consecutive games at LMU (March 18-19)... Was 8-for-15 with 7 RBIs during a three-game sweep at Santa Clara (April 9-10), including hitting a grand slam in Game One- a 19-2 Torero victory... Set a career-high with five hits in the series finale at Santa Clara (4-10-05), going 5-for-5 with a double and two RBIs... Knocked in 5 runs at Cal State Northridge (4-19-05), doubling and hitting a three-run homer... Finished the season strong, hitting safely in six of USD's final seven contests, including going 3-for-4 in a critical Game Three victory at Gonzaga (5-8-05)... Struck out just 18 times in 266 plate appearances... Was intentionally walked seven times, including twice in one game- at Portland (4-23-05)... Batted .279 on the 2005 season, finishing among the WCC league-leaders in HR (10), total bases (113) & RBIs (42).

Freshman (2004): Garnered Freshmen All-American honors by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball News... Named the 2004 West Coast Conference/Rawlings Freshman of the Year... Also honored as a second team All-WCC selection... Hit for a team-leading .375 batting average (2nd overall in the WCC)... Abruzzo's WCC numbers were outstanding, he lead the league in total bases (84), ranked second in homeruns (7), average (.411), hits (53), runs scored (31) and RBI (37), also ranked third in slugging % (.656)... Started a total of 49 games, with injury limiting his playing time in January and early February... Despite missing seven starts, led San Diego in total bases (119) and homeruns (9)... Struck out just 13 times in 227 plate appearances... Posted 13 multi-hit games, totaling 2 or more hits in 8 of USD's last 13 outings, helping USD win 11 of those contests... Homered four times in the last two weeks of the regular season... Twice hit homeruns from both sides of the plate in a weekend series... Named the WCC/Rawlings Player of the Week (5/24) after going 8-for-14 (.571 BA) with nine RBI's, two homeruns and four doubles during a USD three-game sweep over WCC foe St. Mary's...Posted 4 hits (season high) twice... Went 4-for-6 (HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) vs. Gonzaga (5/8)... Ripped St. Mary's (5/24), going 4-for-5 (HR, 2B, 4 RBI, 3R)... Finished the regular season on a seven game hitting streak, posting a .515 average (17-of-33), hitting 4 homeruns, 5 doubles and totaling 15 RBI over that span... On the season Abruzzo posted an on-base % of .417... Helped the Toreros total 35 wins during the 2004 regular season, the third best win total in USD school history.

High School: Starred at El Capitan High School in nearby El Cajon... Was a First-Team All-State selection, hitting .455 with 8 HR and 44 RBI's as a prep senior... Led El Capitan to a 26-8 overall record and a CIF Championship in 2003... As a junior hit .430 with 7 HR and 45 RBI's and was named an All-Grossmont North League player... Helped El Capitan compile a 25-10 record his junior year... Played for the Encinitas Reds club program on a team that reached the Connie Mack World Series.

Personal: Born on August 2, 1984 in San Diego, California... Son of Steve and Marsha Abruzzo... Also recruited by Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount... Brother, Spike played collegiate baseball... Chose to attend USD for the academic and athletic opportunities.
