Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - In one of the strangest games ever played at the University of San Diego, the Torero baseball team (1-0) captured their first win of the season, 6-4, over the University of New Mexico (0-1).

The game began Friday evening, then was halted due to a sudden heavy fog after 39 minutes in the bottom of the third inning, and resumed played Saturday afternoon at 12:35 p.m., and lasted a total of 2:49 minutes.

The Toreros wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across one run in the bottom of the first, Friday evening. Louie Lechich got things started with a single to second base. After Lechich moved to second on a wild pitch, Andrew Daniel singled him in to give USD the early 1-0 lead.

New Mexico then scored a pair of runs in the top of third inning on two hits. With two outs, Sam Haggerty hit a pop up in the infield, but the Toreros dropped the routine fly ball, allowing Haggerty to keep the inning alive. Chase Harris them hit a home run to left field to move the score to 2-1 in favor of the Lobos.

In the bottom of the third, Baily got things going with a one-out single, and he moved to second on a wild pitch. Lechich then laced a double into the fog down the left field line and that drove in Bailey to even the score a 2-2. Right after that play, the umpires called for a delay, as the fog continued to roll in and affected visibility. After a 30-minute delay, the umpires called the game, and it was decided to resume it on Saturday.

Then when the game resumed Saturday, a pitching change was made, and Lechich stole third on the new pitcher. Connor Joe then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Lechich and give USD a 3-2 lead.

San Diego would then take on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a 2-run homer by Josh Goossen-Brown, which scored Grant Melker, who had doubled, to give USD a 5-2 lead.

The Lobos then made things interesting by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning, but a Joe solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning gave USD an insurance run, and put the game at its final of 6-4.

Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey, Lechich and Melker all recorded two hits apiece, while Goossen-Brown had a home run and two RBI.

On the mound, PJ Conlon started the game for USD on Friday, and he was cruising along before the game was halted on fog. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of work. Lucas Long (1-0), who began Saturday's game on the mound, picked up the win for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work. UNM's Drew Bridges (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Lobos, as he allowed three runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action later this afternoon at 4:05 p.m., as they resume their three-game series with the Lobos at Fowler Park.
