Both games in Sunday’s doubleheader included late-innings drama with the Toreros (2-2) mounting comebacks in both games.
USD tied the first game in the eighth inning but ran out of steam in extra innings and dropped the decision, 7-4. The Toreros bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth in the second game to walk off the Bearcats (2-1) to conclude the weekend.

Jay Schuyler had a huge day at the plate, going 6-for-9 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs. His biggest swings came in the second game, launching a two-run homer in the sixth inning when the Toreros were trailing 3-0. Then, hitting his second home run to tie the game at 3-3 with one out in the bottom of the ninth.

It was a group effort by the Toreros pitching staff with eight pitchers taking the mound over the two games.
San Diego overcame an early deficit in the first game, tying the game 4-4 in the eighth inning but they could not complete the comeback in extra innings.
Louie Crow got the start on the mound for the Toreros and held the Bearcats to three runs on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Anthony Donatella pitched well in relief, holding Cincinnati scoreless and only allowing two hits and one walk with one strikeout in 4.0 innings.
San Diego jumped out to an early, 1-0, lead when Jay Schuyler powered a line drive past Cincinnati’s second baseman to bring in a run. The lead did not last long, however, as Cincinnati’s Cole Murphy hit a three-run home run to right-center field.
Garrett Calvert led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to left field and came home on an RBI-single by Trevor Rosenburg to cut into the Bearcats lead, 3-2.
Cincinnati got the run back in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Jace Mercer to retake a two-run lead, 4-2.
Back-to-back infield singles by Schuyler and Daniel Gardner got the Toreros going in the bottom of the eighth inning. Schuyler came home on a ground out to the left side of the infield by Garrett Calvert and Gardner hustled home on a sacrifice fly by Shane McGuire to knot the game at, 4-4.
The Toreros had their chances in the ninth. Tora Otsuka singled to center with one out. He took off for second after an errant pick-off throw and attempted to head to third but was thrown out.
Brhet Bewley followed with a double down the left-field line with two outs. Schuyler nearly had the game-winning hit in the next at-bat but a great catch by Cincinnati’s AJ Bumpass in the right-field corner sent the game to extra innings.
The Bearcats rallied for three runs in the ninth and the Toreros could not keep pace, dropping the 7-4 decision.
Jay Schuyler and Bhret Bewley provided the late-inning heroics in the second game.
Trailing 3-0 in the sixth, Schuyler hammered a two-run homer to left field to cut the Toreros deficit to, 3-2. He stepped to the plate in the ninth with one out and replicated the result, hitting his second home run of the game to knot the score at, 3-3.
Daniel Gardner doubled to right field in the next at-bat and Shane McGuire was intentionally walked to bring up Bewley. He made the most of the opportunity and sent a 3-1 pitch into left field to bring in Gardner from second and secure the 4-3 victory for the Toreros.

It was a group effort on the hill for USD with Nate Walker getting the start and tossing 4.0 innings, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Nicola Mislinski and Nigel Ward did well in relief but it was Travis Kuhn (1-0) who picked up the victory. Kuhn held Cincinnati scoreless and permitted just two hits and one walk with a pair of strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
San Diego will play host to British Columbia in an exhibition on Monday at 6 p.m. PT and travel to San Diego State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
