SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 11th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team had a huge offensive day as they recorded 11 hits en route to a 10-7 win over No. 16 Oklahoma Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 3-2 overall and split the two-game set with the Sooners. With the loss, the Sooners suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 5-1 overall.
The Sooners jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning, as they scored runs on a Kaleb Harren run-scoring double, a bases-loaded Matt Harughty walk, a bases-loaded hit batter, a USD wild pitch and a Bryant Hernandez RBI single to give OU a 5-0 lead.
The Toreros then responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Zach Walters got things started with a single to left field and moved to third on a Chris Engell single through the right side to give USD runners at the corners with one out. Michael Lugo then reached on a fielders choice, which scored Walters from third. Kevin Muno doubled to left field to drive in Lugo and cut the lead to 5-2.
Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Toreros scored six runs on six hits to take control of the game. Lugo got things started with his first collegiate home run, a solo shot over the right centerfield fence. Muno then drew a walk and moved to third on a Steven Chatwood single through the left side. Sean Nicol then drove in Muno with a RBI single. After Chatwood moved up one base on a wild pitch, James Meador hit a two-run double to right center field to push across the next two runs. After Austin Green reached on a fielding error, Zach Walters drove in Meador with a RBI single and the final run came on a Engle run-scoring double to give USD a 8-5 lead.
After the Toreros tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning, the Sooners would make things interesting by putting up two runs of their own in the top of the seventh inning. But that is as close as they would come, leaving the game at its final at 10-7.
Offensively for the Toreros, Walters led the way as he went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Chatwood went 2-for-3 and Engle went 2-for-5 with one double.
Matt Thomson (1-0) was credited with the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed five runs on eight hits, while striking out a career-high seven in 5.0 innings of work. Michael Rocha (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Sooners as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will take Thursday off before beginning play in the USD Tournament on Friday with a 2 p.m. game against the University of the Pacific.
