RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The 20th-ranked UC Riverside Highlanders (10-4) used a big six-run second inning to claim a 9-4 upset win over the 16th-rankeed University of San Diego baseball team (11-6) Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at the Riverside Sports Complex.
The Highlanders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Mark Samuelson hit a run-scoring double to bring in Jamie Padroza, who had walked.
The Highlanders then scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The UCR runs came on Jeff Dunbar sacrifice fly, a Carl Uhl RBI single, a fielding error by the USD left fielder and a three-run home run by Mike Vass.
The Toreros broke into the scoring column in the top of the third inning, scoring one run. Kevin Muno led off the inning with a single up the middle and stole second. Justin Snyder then moved Muno to third on a single to right field and Josh Romanski drove in the first Torero run of the game, as he reached on a fielder's choice to move the score to 7-1.
San Diego then took back two more runs in the fourth inning. Daniel Magness got things going as he was hit by a pitch. Sean Nicol then singled to the shortstop, who in turn overthrew the first baseman, allowing Magness to advance to third and moving Nicol to second. Shane Buschini then drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field and the final USD run came on a wild pitch by the UCR starting pitcher.
The Highlanders then took a 9-3 lead, scoring one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. The UCR runs came on a Samuelson RBI single and a Price RBI single in the fifth inning.
USD then took back one run on two hits in the seventh inning. Muno led off the inning with a stand-up double and moved to second on a Kevin Hansen ground out to the first baseman. Snyder then brought in Muno with a sacrifice fly to left field to cut the lead to five at 9-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Nicol led the way as he went 3-for-4 with one double and one run scored. Muno was also a solid force at the plate for USD as he went 2-for-3 with one double and one run scored.
Chad Blauer (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed five runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work. Marc Rzepczynsky (3-0) picked up the win for UCR as he allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits in 5.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head to Fresno for a three-game series with Fresno State University at 6 p.m.
