SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of San Diego baseball team (3-3) held on to claim a 7-6 win over No. 20 Tulane University (4-2) Saturday evening at the Tony Gwynn Classic held inside the friendly confines of Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 3-3 overall, have won three consecutive games and will move on to the championship game of the Tony Gwynn Classic on Sunday at 10 a.m. over at SDSU's Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Toreros will square off against UC Santa Barbara, who won the other half of the bracket.
Tulane got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across one run in the top of the first inning. The Green Wave run came on Jeremy Montalbano solo home run.
San Diego then responded in the bottom of the second inning, as they scored four runs on four hits. Riley Adams got things started when he was hit by a pitch, and he moved to third when Ryan Kirby singled through the right side. Daniel Gardner then laid down a sacrifice bunt, which scored Adams, and moved Kirby to second. Back-to-Back run-scoring doubles by Kevin Collard and Connor Doyle scored the next two runs, and Jeff Houghtby then pushed in the final run on a RBI single, to give USD a 4-1 lead.
The Green Wave then took back one run in the third, but San Diego scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth, then added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-2 lead.
Tulane then made things really interesting late, by scoring three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, but could get no closer, as USD held on to get the win.
Offensively for the Toreros, Kirby led the way, as he went 3-for-3 with one double and two RBI.
Freshman lefty Nick Sprengel (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win, as he allowed two runs on nine hits, while striking out six in 5.1 innings of work. Tulane's Alex Massey (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Green Wave, as he allowed six runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.
