WILMINGTON, N.C. - Behind a powerful 3-for-4, two double and one home run performance from junior All-American Kris Bryant, the University of San Diego baseball team cruised to a 5-0 win over Gardner-Webb University Friday morning in the first game of the Hughes Brothers Tournament at Brooks Field.
With the win, there Toreros improve to 5-4 overall and have now won five of their last six games. With the loss, the Runnin Bulldogs drop to 6-2-1 overall on the young season.
Bryant paced he Toreros offense as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one home run, while driving in a pair of runs. As a team, USD recorded 12 hits, marking back-to-back double digit hits performances for the Toreros. Connor Joe also looked impressive, as the first baseman went 3-for-4 with a home run while Chris Woolley went 2-for-5 and Andrew Daniel recorded his first home run of the season, a solo blast in the fourth inning.
On the mound, Michael Wagner (1-1) was dominate yet again, as he went 7.0 innings, not allowing a single run and recorded four strikeouts. Max MacNabb came on in relief and was able to pick up his first save of the season, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 2.0 innings of work. GWU's starting pitcher, Matt Fraudin (2-1), was saddled with the loss on the mound, as he allowed three runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work.
San Diego scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning, as Bryant hit a two-out double to centerfield. Dillon Haupt then hit an RBI single to centerfield to score Bryant and give USD a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Toreros put up a pair of runs on back-to-back solo home runs by Joe and Daniel to lead off the inning, to give USD a 3-0 lead.
The Toreros managed to cap their scoring for the day with a two-run top of the ninth. With two outs, Woolley got things started with a single to left field. Bryant then did the rest, as he hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to put the game at its final of 5-0.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at noon, as they take on host UNC Wilmington at Brooks Field.
