Toreros rally to 3-1 win in 12 innings at UCLA
March 4, 2017

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The USD baseball team (6-2) rallied to a 3-1 win in extra innings at UCLA Saturday afternoon, their fifth win in a row. The Toreros managed just two hits in the first eight innings, but Riley Adams tied the game 1-1 in the top of the ninth on a RBI single. The Toreros then scored two runs in the 12th inning; one on a Connor Doyle infield single and another on a Jeff Houghtby sacrifice fly. The Torero pitching staff gave up just three hits in 12 innings and didn't allow the Bruins to get a single hit with a runner on base (0-for-11).

The Toreros managed just one hit through the first five innings, but Chris Murphy matched the Bruins' pitching. In his first collegiate start, the freshman lefty allowed just one run on three hits in six innings pitched.

The Bruins got their lone run in the sixth inning on a Sean Bouchard solo home run to left field. Sean Barry (1-0) relieved Murphy and was just as good, pitching five innings of no-hit ball while striking out six batters to earn the win and lower his season ERA to 0.56.

In the ninth inning, with USD down 1-0, Colton Waltner was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Hunter Mercado-Hood then singled to left, advancing Waltner to second. Adams, the Toreros' preseason All-American, then came through with a game-tying clutch single to right field to score Waltner from second.

Bhret Bewley led off the 12th inning with a walk and then moved up to second on a Noah Prewett single through the right side. Both runners would move up a base after a Bruin wild pitch, setting up Doyle for the game-winning infield single, his first hit of the 2017 season. The next batter, Jeff Houghtby tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly to center.

Troy Conyers allowed no hits in the 12th inning to pick up his third save of the season. Conyers hasn't given up a run all season.

The Bruins' Brian Gadsby (2-3) took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.

The Toreros face Michigan at 11:00 a.m. Sunday at Dodger Stadium.
