March 8, 2016

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego baseball team scored five unanswered runs to claim a 7-3 win over William and Mary Tuesday evening in the nightcap of a double-header at Fowler Park.

The Tribe (6-6) got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to take advantage of a USD fielding error, and scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning. The runs came on USD fielding error and a Cullen Large RBI single, to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

USD (6-7) then took back one run in the fourth inning on a Ryan Kirby groundout, which scored Jerod Smith, who had singled, to cut the lead in half.

After both teams scored one run in the fifth inning, USD would begin to pull away with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. The Torero runs came by way of Hunter Mercado-Hood run-scoring double, and a William and Mary fielding error.

USD then scored two more runs in the sixth and one in the eighth to put the game at its final of 7-3.

Offensively for the Toreros, Riley Adams led the way, as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Jeff Houghtby went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Matthew Kirk (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on two hits in 0.2 innings of work. Troy Conyers came on and picked up the save, as he allowed no runs on one hit, while striking out three in 2.0 innings of work. The Tribe’s Bodie Sheehan (0-3) was saddled with the loss, as he allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
