SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Torero baseball squad was back in action on Saturday afternoon in game one of a day/night doubleheader at Fowler Park. USD (10-5) took game one against Saint Louis, avenging Friday night's 6-3 loss to the Billikens.

Saint Louis (10-5) tacked on a run in the top of the first when Braxton Martinez bounced a ball into the hole with runners on first and second. USD shortstop Chris Woolley did a great job of fielding the chopper in the hole and jumping and turning to fire a strike to second baseman Logan Davis to get the out at second. However, Davis bobbled the transfer, allowing the Billiken runner to score from third on the play.

The Toreros evened it up in the bottom half of the inning when Connor Joe hit a sharp ground ball with two outs and runners at the corners that was mishandled by the Saint Louis shortstop, allowing Dillon Checkal to score. Louie Lechich came up next and wasted no time as he ripped a base hit through the right side that plated Dillon Haupt to put USD up 2-1.

Checkal picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the second when he pulled a bouncer through the right side that brought home Woolley from second.

The Billikens answered with a pair of RBI singles in the top half of the third, tying the game at 3-3.

USD went back up ahead in the bottom of the third by scoring two runs. Joe scored from third on a wild pitch followed by a one-out sacrifice bunt by Andrew Daniel that pushed Lechich across from third.

Kris Bryant added another run for the Toreros with his eighth home run of the year, a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth that gave USD a 6-3 advantage. The long ball was Bryant's fifth in the last four games.

The next inning, AJ Robinson lined a triple in the right center gap that scored Lechich from first. In that same inning, Austin Bailey laid down a squeeze bunt with one out that brought home Robinson from third and put the Toreros up 8-3.

From that point the Torero offense was quiet until USD put up three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBI doubles by Bryant and Lechich and a sacrifice fly from Joe.

PJ Conlon (3-0) picked up the win for USD, throwing 4.2 innings in relief where he scattered three hits and struck out four while walking one. Dylan Covey threw 4.1 innings in the start, allowing three runs (2 ER) on seven hits with three strikeouts and five walks.

Clay Smith (2-3) took the loss for Saint Louis with 4.0 innings of work where he allowed eight runs (4 ER) on 10 hits with five strikeouts.

Lechich led the way for USD offensively with his 4-for-4 day at the plate that included a double and two RBI, while Bryant went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, a double and a home run. Woolley (2-for-5) and Checkal (2-for-3) each turned in multi-hit games for the Toreros as well.

The Toreros play in the nightcap against Holy Cross at 7 pm.
