SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Oklahoma (13-4) scored six unanswered runs to upset the 22nd-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (14-9), 6-4, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Petco Park.

For the sixth consecutive game, the Toreros scored one run in the first inning. Sean Nicol got things stared with a walk, then stole second. With two outs, Jordan Abruzzo delivered yet again, as he hit an RBI single to left field to give USD a 1-0 advantage.

San Diego then added to their lead in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Kevin Hansen walked and moved all the way to third on a Josh Romanski double through the right side. After the Sooners walked Nicol to load the bases, Oklahoma starting pitcher Ryan Mottern walked Justin Snyder to push across the second run of the game and give USD a 2-0 lead.

The Toreros then padded their lead with two more runs on three hits in the top of the third inning. Shane Buschini led off with a stand-up double deep into right field. After Daniel Magness moved Buschini to third with a sacrifice bunt, Logan Gelbrich drove in Buschini with a sacrifice fly to center field. Mike Metzger then got on with a bunt down the third baseline and Hansen then drove in Metzger with a triple to right field to push the USD lead to four.

Oklahoma finally broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the third inning on a Aaron Reza ground out to the third baseman, scoring Vinnie Biancamano, who had singled, moving the score to 4-1.

 

 

The Sooners took back another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Jackson Williams RBI single to center field, scoring Devin Sheppard, who had singled.

Oklahoma then scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the game at its final of 6-4.

Offensively for the Toreros, Buschini led the way with his 2-for-4, one double and one run scored performance.

Matt Couch (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed six runs, four earned, on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work. Heath Taylor (3-0) picks up the win for the Sooners as he allowed two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings of work.

The Toreros will conclude play in the Tony Gwynn Classic on Sunday with a 4 p.m. game with cross-town rival San Diego State University at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
