SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD baseball team finished up a day/night doubleheader on Saturday evening with a 17-2 win over Holy Cross. The Toreros collected a season-high 19 hits on the night. Their 17 runs were the second-most they've scored this season (18 vs. Kent State; 2/23). Earlier in the day the Toreros (11-5) defeated Saint Louis 11-3.
The Toreros took an early 2-0 lead when Louie Lechich, who started the game on the mound, helped his own cause with a two-run single in the bottom of the first.
Jerod Smith helped add to the USD lead when he ripped a two-out, two-run double into the right-center gap in the bottom of the third to give the Toreros a 4-0 edge.
Smith then drove in another run for USD with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth that scored Dillon Haupt.
Holy Cross (1-10) got on the board in the top of the sixth with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Nick Lovullo that cut the USD lead to 5-1.
USD took advantage of back-to-back throwing errors by Holy Cross to score another run in the bottom of the sixth, followed by a bases loaded walk that brought home a run for the Toreros and a two-run bases-loaded single by Connor Joe that put USD up 9-1 before an out was even recorded in the inning.
The Toreros didn't stop there as Smith kept his hot hitting going with another RBI, this time a single dropped into right center field that extended USD's lead to 10-1.
Holy Cross plated one run in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly, making the score 10-2.
USD kept adding on with five more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Haupt, Lechich and Robinson each delivered RBI knocks. Haupt then stayed hot with a two-run home run to left-center in the bottom of the eighth that increased USD's lead to 17-2. It was Haupt's third long ball of the year.
Lechich (1-0) earned the win for the Toreros with his 5.0 innings of work where he allowed one run (0 ER) on two hits and struck out six while walking three.
Six Toreros notched multi-hit games on the night, led by Lechich (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 R). Haupt (3-for-4, 4 R) and Smith (3-for-6) each recorded four RBI in the game as well.
The Toreros return to the diamond on Sunday night as they wrap up the USD Tournament with a 5 pm contest against Michigan at Fowler Park.
