SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior All-American Kris Bryant had another monstrous day at the plate, including a walk-off three run homer over the left field fence to lift the University of San Diego baseball team to a thrilling 7-5 come-from-behind win over Brigham Young University in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams Thursday evening at Fowler Park.
With the Toreros (12-6, 1-0 WCC) trailing 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, USD put on their rally caps and went to work. Logan Davis, who was pinch hitting for Grant Melker, got things started with a single to the shortstop. Davis then moved to second on a wild pitch. After Chris Woolley was hit by a pitch, Dillon Checkal kept things alive, as hit the ball to the shortstop, who in turn made the force out at second, but he could not complete the double play as Checkal beat the throw by a half a step to put runners at the corners with one out. Then Bryant stepped to the plate, having already hit two home runs, and he simply unleashed a three-run blast over the left field fence to lift the Toreros to victory.
Bryant led the Torero offense, as he became the first Torero since Jordan Abruzzo to hit three home runs in a game, tying the USD single-game record. Overall, Bryant was a perfect 3-for-3, with three home runs, six RBI and a pair of walks, and he scored three runs.
The Cougars (9-8, 0-1 WCC) managed to get on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the first inning, lead-off batter Jacob Hanneman turned on the third pitch of the game, and sent it over the right field fence to give BYU an early 1-0 lead.
San Diego then answered back in the bottom of the second inning, as Louie Lechich hit a triple to left field, and Andrew Daniel drove him in on a sacrifice fly to right field to move the score to 1-1.
USD then took the lead I the bottom of there third inning, as Bryant hit his first home run of the game, a two-run shot over the right field fence to move the score to 3-1 in favor of there home team.
BYU came back and managed to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning, as they score three runs on two hits. The BYU runs came on Jaycob Brugman 3-run homer to move the score to 4-3.
USD then evened the score at 4-all in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Bryant hit his second home run to right field.
BYU then regained the lead and momentum in the top of the seventh inning, as they managed to push across one run on a Jarrett Jarvis RBI single to give BYU a 5-4 lead, setting up the thrilling finish.
PJ Conlon (3-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on four hits in 3.2 innings of work. BYU's closer, James Lengel (0-2), was saddled with the loss for the Cougars, as he allowed three runs on two hits in 1.0 innings of work.
The Toreros and Cougars will resume their three-game series on Friday with a 6 p.m. WCC game at Fowler Park.
Notes:Jordan Abruzzo hit his three home runs back on June 3, 2006, as he went 5-for-5 with three home runs and eight RBI against Saint Louis in an elimination game at the Fullerton Regional. USD won that game by a final of 19-12.
