With the win, the Torero improve to 13-6 overall, move to 2-0 in the WCC, and claimed their WCC opening series over the Cougars. With the loss, BYU falls to 9-9 overall and 0-2 in the WCC.
The Cougars managed to get on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Kelton Caldwell was able to turn on a pitch from USD starter Dylan Covey, and took it over the right field fence, which scored Brock Whitney, who reached on a fielder's choice, to give BYU there early 2-0 lead.
After BYU tacked on a third run in the top of the third inning, USD finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Austin Bailey got things started, as he drew a walk. Chris Woolley then singled up the middle, which moved Bailey to third. Dillon Checkal then grounded into a double play, which scored Bailey from third, to moved the score to 3-1.
Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, USD looked for some 2-out magic, and they got just that. Connor Joe got things started with a single through the left side. Joe then moved to second on a wild pitch, and AJ Robinson hit an RBI single up the middle to score Joe. After Robinson moved to second on a wild pitch, Andrew Daniel laced a RBI single to left field to score Robinson ,and tie the game up at 3-all.
USD then added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Torero runs came on Haupt 2-run double to right center field, to put the game at its final of 5-3.
Haupt led the USD offense, as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Joe also had a good day at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Homick (3-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on three hits, while striking out eight in 4.1 innings of work. Max MacNabb came on and got his second save of the season, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 0.1 innings of work. BYU's Adam Miller (1-4) was saddled with the loss for the Cougars, as he allowed five runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings of work.
The Toreros and Cougars will conclude their three-game series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. WCC game at Fowler Park.
