SPOKANE, Wash. - The 25th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team suffered an 8-1 West Coast Conference loss to Gonzaga University Saturday evening at the Patterson Baseball Complex.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 14-8 overall and 3-2 in the WCC. With the win, the Zags improve to 14-6-1 overall, move to 4-1 in the WCC, and they claim the series.
Gonzaga got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the bottom of the first inning. The GU run came when Billy Moon reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Mitchell Gunsolus, who had singled, to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
After the home team put up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, USD would cut into that deficit in the top of the sixth inning. Kris Bryant got things started with a triple down the right field line. Dillon Haupt then doubled in Bryant to move the score to 3-1.
Gonzaga then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh inning as they scored five runs on three hits to put the game at its final of 8-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Lucas Hagberg led the way, as he went 2-for-4.
Dylan Covey (1-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work. Tyler Olsen (4-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Zags, as he allowed one run on eight hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The Toreros and Bulldogs will conclude the series on Sunday with a 12 p.m. WCC game at the Patterson Baseball Complex.
