SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's baseball team completed the series sweep over Santa Clara to open West Coast Conference competition with a 12-4 win Monday afternoon.

Toreros starting pitcher Dylan Covey opened the game by striking out the side in the top of the first inning and the Toreros offense wasted no time getting things going, as Louie Lechich provided a two-out double down the right field line to score Andrew Daniel, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, for the 1-0 lead.

Santa Clara (13-7, 0-3 WCC) responded to take the 2-1 lead in the second inning on a two-out, two-RBI single down the left field line by Zach Looney. The Toreros (21-6, 3-0 WCC) led off the bottom of the second with back-to-back line drive singles from A.J. Robinson and Bryan Haar. Daniel followed with a double down the left field line to even the score at 2-2. Kris Bryant then extended the Toreros lead with a prodigious three-run home run to left center to extend take the lead at 5-2.

Bryant's home run was his seventh in a ten-day span, his eighth of the season and his second in three games of WCC competition.

Santa Clara chipped away with two more runs in the top of the third, but the Toreros responded right back to pad their lead at 7-4 on a double down the left field line by Haar to score Connor Joe and Dillon Haupt. The Torero bats stayed hot in the fourth, adding three more runs to take the 10-4 lead. Bryant scored all the way from first base on Haupt's double to center field. Victor Rasor-Thompson then laced a pinch-hit, two-RBI double over left fielder Pat Stover's head to score both Joe and Haupt.



USD tagged on runs in the fifth and seventh innings on a sacrifice flies by Corey LeVier and Louie Lechich for the 12-4 lead.

San Diego put together 12 hits and scored at least one run in the first five innings. Leading the way offensively was Bryant, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI while Daniel went 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. Haupt (1-for-2, two runs scored and two RBI) reached base in four out of his five plate appearances, including three walks, and Bryan Haar added three hits and two RBI.

Dylan Covey (3-1) was strong in his five innings of work, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out seven and walking just one. James Pazos continues to be a workhorse out of the Torero bullpen. He earned his second save of the season in four shutdown innings, allowing just three hits.

The Toreros got to Broncos starting pitcher Mike Couch (1-2) early. Couch was saddled with the loss by allowing seven earned runs and five hits in two innings.

The Toreros return to action this weekend and travel north to take on the University of San Francisco for a three-game series. Game two of the series will be played at the home of the San Francisco Giants Saturday at AT&T Park.
