CONWAY, S.C. - The University of San Diego baseball team rallied back to even the series with No. 10 Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon by claiming a 5-3 win at Watson Stadium.
The Chanticleers got on the scoreboard first as they pushed across one run on two hits. The Coastal Carolina run came on a bases-loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros (13-11) answered back in the top of the fourth inning scoring two runs on two hits. James Meador got things started with a single to centerfield and moved to second on a Victor Sanchez walk. After both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, Steven Chatwood would drive in Meador with a RBI single to left field. Austin Green then drove in Sanchez with a RBI sacrifice fly to right center field to give USD a 2-1 lead.
San Diego kept things rolling in the top of the fifth inning scoring three more runs on three hits. Scott Schauer got things started with a double down the left field line. Matt Moynihan, who pinch hit for Zack Kometani, hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, which moved Kalei Hanawahine, who pinch ran for Schauer, to third. Hanawahine then scored on a wild pitch to give USD a 3-1 lead. Back-to-back walks by Kevin Muno and Tony Strazzara kept the momentum going and the next two batters, Meador and Sanchez, each hit a RBI single to cap the scoring for the day and give USD a 5-1 edge.
The Chanticleers then added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Taylor Motter two-run homer to put the game at its final of 5-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Meador led the way as he went 2-for-5 with one RBI.
Sammy Solis (4-1) was credited with the win for the Toreros as he allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out seven in 6.2 innings of work. Matt Hauser picked up his fourth save of the season as he allowed no runs on one hit in 2.1 innings of work. Jim Birmingham (3-1) was saddled with the loss for the Chanticleers as he allowed five runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Toreros and Chanticleers will return to action on Sunday as they play in a rubber game at 8 a.m. (PT).
