FRESNO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team made NCAA history Saturday evening as they competed in, but lost, a hard fought 3-2, 22-inning game to No. 10 Fresno State University at Beiden Field. The 22 innings, ties the two teams for third longest game in NCAA Division I history. The record is held by Texas vs. Boston College at 25 innings on June 1, 2009 in the Austin Regional, and the regular-season record is held by Lafeyette vs. McNeese State on March 27, 1971. Two other teams, Baylor vs. Houston (Feb. 21, 1999) and Colorado vs. Nebraska (Apr. 26, 1974), also went 22 innings along with tonight's game.
The Bulldogs (16-2) were able to outlast the Toreros (4-16) in the bottom of the 22nd inning, scoring one run on two hits. Danny Muno got things started with a single, he then stole second, and with two outs, Garrett Weber hit an RBI single to left field to lift FSU to a 3-2 victory.
In the top of the 21st inning, the Toreros had a golden opportunity to push across a run themselves, as they loaded the bases with a Danny Hawksley walk, a Zach Sullivan single and a Bryan Haar single with no outs. But two strikeouts later, and a runner thrown out at home ended the scoring threat, and keeping the game tied at 2-2.
The Toreros got o the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Kris Bryant got things started with a single to left field. Zack Kometani then moved Bryant to second on a single to centerfield, and Corey LeVier then drove in Bryant with a RBI single to left field to give USD a 1-0 lead.
San Diego then doubled its lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring one run on two hits. Kevin Muno got things started with a double down the left field line. Muno then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Bryant drove in Muno with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give USD a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs then tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, as a Brennan Gowens two-run double to left center scored Scott David, who was pinch running, and Pat Hutchenson, who walked, to force extra innings.
Offensively for the Toreros, Sullivan led the way as he went 5-for-9, while Bryant (3-for-8), Muno (3-for-10), Kometani (2-for-3) and LeVier (2-for-6) all recorded multiple hits on the day.
On the mound, the Toreros got great pitching efforts from all four Torero pitchers used. Starter James Pazos went 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on five hits, while striking out a career-high eight. Chris Jensen also had a good outing, as he allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out a career-high nine in 6.0 innings of work. Paul Sewald allowed no runs on seven hits, while striking out a career-high eight in 7.0 innings of work, and Paul Paez (1-3) was saddled with the loss, as he allowed one run on four hits in 3.2 innings of work. Fresno State's Tyler Linehan picked up the win for the Bulldogs, as he allowed no runs on two hits in 2.1 innings of work.
The Toreros and Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. to conclude this series.
