CONWAY, S.C. - Sophomore Anthony Meo threw 8.2 strong innings and classmates Steve Davis and Daniel Bowman had three hits apiece, but San Diego (14-11) scored a run in the ninth to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the 10th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (19-5) 2-1 March 28 in Conway, S.C.
Meo was locked in a pitcher's duel with San Diego's AJ Griffin, as both hurlers went deep into the game. Coastal struck first in the bottom of the third. Junior Rico Noel walked to open the frame. Classmate Scott Woodward sacrificed him to second and senior Adam Rice brought him in with a two-out single. San Diego tied the game in the fifth, scoring an unearned run. With one out, Austin Green doubled down the left field line. Green stole third. Victor Sanchez hit a grounder down the third-base line that Woodward made a great play on, but his throw was low and got by Rice, allowing Green to score.
Coastal tried to use a little two-out magic in the seventh. After sophomore Taylor Motter flied out and junior Hayes Orton struck out, Noel singled up the middle. Noel went to second on a single from Woodward. Griffin then walked senior Jose Iglesias, but got Rice to fly out to end the inning.
San Diego would break through in the ninth. Mike Ferraro opened the inning with a double in the left center gap to open the inning. Meo would get Tony Strazzara to fly out and Steven Chatwood to ground out. Coastal brought in junior Matt Rein and he gave up a single to Green that scored Ferraro for the 2-1 lead.
Noel led off the ninth with a walk. Woodward sacrificed him to second and Noel stole third. San Diego reliever Darrin Campbell hit Iglesias. The Toreros brought in Matt Hauser and got Rice to ground into a double play to end the game and give USD the series win.
Meo's 8.2 innings pitched was a career high. He struck out six and gave up six hits, one earned run with two walks. He was tagged with his first loss of the year. Griffin struck out nine in seven innings, giving up eight hits and a run with three walks. Campbell earned the win in relief, giving up two hits in 1.1 innings while Hauser earned his fifth save of the season.
Bowman and Davis both had three hits, while Green was 3-for-4 for the Toreros.
