SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Led by Roman Garcia, the No. 23 USD baseball team (17-6, 6-1) mounted a seventh inning rally to knock off San Francisco 6-4 Friday evening at Fowler Park. USD had given up a lead in the top of the inning, but Garcia hit a three run homer to give USD the 6-4 lead.
The Toreros grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Roman Garcia and Jay Schuyler led off the inning with a pair of singles. Kevin Collard then doubled to right center to bring in Garcia. Dante Gutierrez pinch hit and drove in the second run of the inning with a groundout, his first collegiate RBI.
The Dons cut the Toreros’ lead in half in the top of the sixth with a Michael Perri RBI single.
USD immediately responded in the bottom of the sixth when Brhet Bewley drove in Schuyler, who led off the inning with a double down the left field line.
San Francisco rallied to take the lead in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits. The Dons led off the inning with back-to-back singles and then both runners were moved up on a sacrifice bunt. They would then capitalize on a couple of Torero miscues; scoring one on a Nick Sprengel wild pitch and another on a USD error.
Sprengel was then lifted for Sean Barry, who got the final two outs of the inning, but not before allowing an RBI single to give USF a 4-3 lead.
With runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, Roman Garcia belted a three run home run to left center to give USD a 6-4 lead. Garcia leads the Toreros with seven home runs and 23 RBI.
Both teams tallied 11 hits; the Toreros left on eight on base while the Dons stranded six.
Nick Sprengel allowed two earned runs in 6.1 innings and Barry (3-1) got the win after pitching a scoreless inning. Conyers pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit to earn his seventh save of the year.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 6:00 p.m. with freshman lefty Chris Murphy on the mound for the Toreros.
