SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team saw its season-high seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 1-0 loss to the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 23-7 overall and suffer their first West Coast Conference loss as they fall to 5-1 in WCC play. With the win, the Dons avoid a three-game sweep by the Toreros, and improve to 14-`6 overall and 1`-2 in the WCC.
The Dons scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. The USF run came on a Nik Balog run-scoring double to left field, scoring Justin Maffei, who reached on an error, for an unearned, run.
USD had its best scoring opportunity come in the top of the seventh inning. Corey LeVier singled to left field, and advanced to second on a pass ball. Kris Bryant then flew out to left field, which moved LeVier to third, but the Toreros were unable to advance LeVier, leaving the score at 1-0.
Offensively for the Toreros, Louie Lechich went 2-for-3, while LeVier went 2-for-4.
Dylan Covey (3-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one unearned run on four hits, while striking out three in 7.1 innings of work.
USD will return to action on Thursday as they host the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a 3 p.m. WCC game inside the friendly confines of Cunningham Stadium.
