SAN DIEGO, Calif. -The University of San Diego baseball team scored capped off a perfect week with a 5-1 win over Gonzaga University Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 22-9 overall, move to 8-3 in the WCC and have swept the series over GU. With the loss, the Zags fall to 10-21 overall, moved to 6-6 in the WCC, and have now lost seven straight games overall.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as in the bottom of the second inning, the Toreros scored three runs on five hits. With two outs, Andrew Daniel got things going with a single to right field. Ben Wylly then launched his third home run of the series, a 2-run blast over the right field fence. Ryan Kirby kept things going with a single to left field, and Connor Joe moved Kirby to second on a single to center field. Louie Lechichthen hit an RBI single through the right side to score Kirby and give USD a 3-0 lead.
USD then went on to score one run in the third and eighth innings to cap their scoring for the day, while GU spoiled the shutout by scoring one unearned run in the top of the ninth to put the game at its final of 5-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Jesse Jenner led the way, as he went a perfect 3-for-3 with home run, and one RBI. Joe also had a good day, as he went 2-for-4 with a double.
Lucas Long(3-1) picked up the win on the mound after tossing an incredible 8.0 innings, allowing no runs on just three hits, and recording a pair of strikeouts, and only throwing a total of 83 pitches, just about 10 per inning. Gonzaga's Andrew Sopko (2-2) was saddled with the loss for the Zags, as he allowed four runs on 10 hits in 7.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they head up to Orange County to take on the Anteaters of UC Irvine. Game is set for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
