Sammy Solis picked up his fifth win of the season
April 10, 2010
San Diego, Calif.- Left-handed redshirt sophomore Sammy Solis restricted WCC foe Loyola Marymount to one run in 7.2 innings pitched, helping the University of San Diego baseball team to a 6-1 victory over the Lions on Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium. Solis struck out seven and walked two, while scattering seven hits throughout the winning decision.
Solis (5-1) found himself working out of the stretch in each of the first three innings as LMU managed to put runners on in the early parts of their time at the plate. Solis closed out each inning unscathed, however, including strikeouts to end the second and third frames. For his next four and two-thirds innings pitched, the southpaw punched out another five and surrendered only three hits.
The Toreros (16-14, 2-0) offense supported their starter with six runs of production. USD picked up their first run in the first when redshirt junior Kevin Muno led off the game with a double. After advancing to third on an errant pick-off attempt by LMU starter Ramiro Carreon, Muno came home when senior James Meador registered a long single to right-center.
After Muno scored the second of his three runs on the afternoon in the second, redshirt senior Nick McCoy delivered a solo home run to give USD a 3-0 lead after four.
A three-run fifth capped USD's scoring for the afternoon, highlighted by RBI from senior Chris Engell, Meador, and junior Tony Strazzara. Muno led off the inning with a single, which was followed up by an Engell triple to right-center. With Engell on third, Meador hit a fly ball to LMU centerfielder Ryan Hawthorne, who misplayed the ball and allowed it to drop, scoring Engell, who was ready to tag up. Meador reached second on the error and was later plated when Strazzara hit an RBI single to make it 6-0.
Senior Matt Hauser threw 1.1 innings in relief of Solis, striking out two.
Muno, Engell, and Meador each had two hits to lead USD, while Meador led the team with two RBI.
The Toreros will look to sweep the Lions on Sunday, April 11th at 1 p.m. at Cunningham Stadium.
