SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 19th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team scored six unanswered runs to claim a 6-2 victory over San Diego State University Monday evening in a non-conference game at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 26-8 overall and claim the season-sweep over the Aztecs. With the loss, the Aztecs fall to 17-17 overall.
The Aztecs got on the scoreboard first, as John Spirk led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to left field to give SDSU a 1-0 lead.
After the Aztecs doubled their lead in the bottom of the third on a bases-loaded walk, USD then evened the score in the top of the fourth inning. After Dillon Haupt reached on a fielder's choice, Louie Lechich unleashed his first home run as a Torero, a two-run blast to right field to even the score at 2-2.
The Toreros then took the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring one run on two hits. With two outs, Dillon Checkal drew a walk. Corey LeVier moved Jon Hotta, who was pinch running for Checkal, to second on a single to left field, and Kris Bryant then drove in Hotta with an RBI single to left field to give USD a 3-2 lead.
The Toreros offense continued to roll, as they scored in the third consecutive inning, pushing across a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on a Bryan Haar two-run double down the left field line to extend the Torero lead to three at 5-2.
USD then capped their scoring for the day in the top of the ninth, as they scored ? runs on ? hits.
Offensively for the Toreros, Lechich led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Bryant and Haar also went 2-fof-4 with Bryant driving in one run and Haar driving in two.
Drew Jacobs (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win for the Toreros on the mound, as he allowed no runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work. Michael Wagner came on and picked up his 15th save of the season, allowing no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work. The 15 saves is a new USD single-season record, passing AJ Griffin's 14 from the 2008 season. Aztec starter, Philip Walby (0-2), was saddled with the loss, as he allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
USD will return to action on Friday at 3 p.m., as they open a three-game non-conference series against La Salle University inside the friendly confines of Cunningham Stadium.
