SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a dominating pitching performance from junior right-hander Chris Jensen, the University of San Diego baseball team (9-22, 1-3 WCC) defeated Pepperdine University (15-17, 1-3 WCC), 13-3, Friday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
Jensen (1-5) picked up his first win of the season, as he allowed three unearned runs on six hits, while tying a career-high with nine strikeouts, and did not issue a single walk in 8.0 innings of work. Jensen did not give up a hit until the third inning, as he retired eight of his first nine batters.
Offensively for the Toreros, Julian Duran led the way as he went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Kris Bryant also had a good day at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI, and the final USD player to record multiple hits was Kevin Muno who went 2-for-6 with one RBI.
San Diego was able to get on the scoreboard first as they pushed across three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bryant got things started with double to left field and he moved to third on a Scott Schauer sacrifice bunt. Zach Sullivan then laid down a RBI bunt single to push across Bryant for the first run of the game. After a strikeout, Sullivan stole second and Corey LeVier drew a walk with two outs. Duran then hit a big two-out single to right field, which scored Sullivan from second and moved LeVier to second. Muno then capped the scoring for the inning with an RBI single to centerfield to give USD a 3-0 lead.
The Toreros then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning, as they scored four runs on two hits. The Toreros runs came on a Sullivan ground out, an error by the shortstop and a Duran two-run double to give USD a 7-0 lead.
Pepperdine then got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning as they took advantage of a pair of USD fielding errors to score two unearned runs and cut the lead down to five at 7-2.
USD then went on to score one run in the sixth, Pepperdine scored one run in the eighth, and the Toreros then scored five more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game at its final of 13-3.
The Toreros and Waves will return to action on Saturday as they play in a 1 p.m. WCC game at Cunningham Stadium.
