SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 17th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team's six-game winning streak came to an end Friday afternoon with a 7-1 loss to Saint Mary's College in a West Coast Conference game at Cunningham Stadium.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 29-9 overall, and move to 7-3 in the WCC. With the win, the Gaels improve to 18-17 overall and 3-7 in the WCC.

The Gaels got on the scoreboard first, as they scored one run in the top of the first inning, then they had their big blow come in the top of the fourth inning, as they scored three runs on two hits. The SMC runs came on Brenden Kalfus two-run single, and a Ricky Boas RBI bunt single to give SMC a 4-0 lead.

After the Gaels added one run in the top of the fifth inning, the Toreros managed to spoil the shutout, as they scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Louie Lechich got things started, as he singled. Then Kris Bryant hit a bloop double to right field in between three SMC players, and Lechich reached third on the play. However, the SMC right fielder then made a wide throw to third base, which allowed Lechich to score the only USD run of the game.

SMC would go on to score their final two runs of the game in the top of the ninth to put the game at its final of 7-1.

Offensively for the Toreros, Corey LeVier led the way, as he went 3-for-4, while Lechich was the only other Torero to record multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4.

Calvin Drummond (7-3) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits in 3.2 innings of work. SMC's Martin Agosta (6-2) picked up the win, as he allowed one unearned run on eight hits in 7.0 innings of work.

The Toreros and Gaels will return to action on Saturday, as they play game two of this three-game WCC series at 1 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Cunningham Stadium.
