SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a dominating pitching performance from senior right-hander Paul Sewald, and an 16-hit effort form the Torero offense, the 17th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team cruised to a 7-3 West Coast Conference win over Saint Mary's College Sunday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 31-9 overall, remain in first place in the WCC at 9-3, claim the three-game series with the Gales, and have now won seven consecutive weekend series. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 18-19 overall and 3-9 in the WCC.
Sewald (6-1) was dominate from start to finish today, as he took a no-hitter into the fourth inning, retiring the first nine batters he faced, before Donald Collins led off the fourth inning with a stand-up triple. Sewald then settled down again and only allowed three runs, one earned, on two hits, while striking out five in 6.0 innings of work. SMC starter, Ben Griset (2-5), was saddled with the loss for the Gaels, as he allowed four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as in the bottom of the third inning, USD scored one run on two hits. Julian Duran led off the inning with a single to left centerfield, then Kris Bryant drilled a double to left centerfield, which scored Duran to give USD the 1-0 lead.
After SMC tied the game in the top of the fourth scoring one run on a Collin Ferguson RBI single, the Torero bats exploded for a four-run bottom of the fourth inning to give USD a comfortable lead. Back-to-back singles by Corey LeVier and Connor Joe got things started. Louie Lechich then moved each runner up a base on a sacrifice bunt and Julian Duran then drove in the first two runs on a single to left field. Bryant then greeted the second SMC pitcher of the day, Patrick Kaene, with a two-run homer over the left field fence to cap the scoring for the inning, and giving the Toreros a 5-1 lead.
USD then capped their scoring for the day in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Bryant RBI single and a Andrew Daniel RBI single.
The Gaels managed to score a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game at its final of 7-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bryant led the way as he went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and fell just a triple short of the cycle, while driving in four runs. With the home run, Bryant became the first Torero to reach double-digit single-season home runs since Victor Sanchez did it in 2008. LeVier also had a nice day at the plate, as he went 3-for-4, while both Duran and Bryan Haar went 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday as they host UC Riverside in a 3 p.m. non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
