Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore center fielder Louie Lechich's walk-off walk lifted the 16th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (32-9) to a thrilling 6-5 non-conference win over UC Riverside (14-20) Tuesday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium.

With the Toreros and Highlanders locked up at 5-runs a piece heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, USD dug in and looked for some Cunningham Stadium magic, and they got just that. Bryan Haar got things started with a lead-off single, and he moved to second on Austin Green's sacrifice bunt. Connor Joe then pinch hit for Austin Bailey, and the Highlanders intentionally walked Joe to get to Victor Rasor-Thompson. UCR relief pitcher Ben Doucette then hit Rasor-Thompson to load the bases with one out. Lechich then stepped to the plate and took the first three pitches to get way ahead in the count at 3-0. Doucette then came back and brought the count full, and his pay-off pitch was outside, allowing Lechich to walk in the final run of the game and give USD a victory.

The Toreros managed to get on the scoreboard first, as in the bottom of the first inning, they scored a pair of runs on one hit. Lechich led off with a walk, and he moved to second when Kris Bryant was hit by a pitch. After Corey LeVier drew a walk to load the bases, Andrew Daniel drove in Lechich and Bryant with a two-run single to give USD an early 2-0 lead.

Riverside then scored two runs in the top of the third inning on error and a Vince Gonzalez RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

After the Highlanders then scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab a 4-2 edge, San Diego managed to cut the deficit down to one in the bottom of the fourth inning with a LeVier run-scoring double to move the score to 4-3.

USD then scored two runs in the eighth, and Riverside scored one in the top of the ninth to set up the exciting finish.

Offensively for the Toreros, Lechich led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while AJ Robinson and Dillon Haupt also went 2-for-4.

Michael Wagner (2-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of work. Doucette (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Highlanders, as he allowed one run on one hit in 1.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they travel to Portland to take on the University of Portland in a 3 p.m. WCC game.
