Haupt's Walk-Off Home Run Lifts USD Past UCR in 11 Innings

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior catcher Dillon Haupt hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the University of San Diego baseball team to a thrilling 3-2 win over visiting UC Riverside in a non-conference game at Fowler Park Tuesday evening.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, Dillon Haupt stepped to the plate to lead off the frame, and with a 2-1 count, he turned on the next pitch, and he hit a no doubter to left field to lift the Toreros to victory. This was Haupt's seventh home run of the season.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 25-15 overall, and run their winning streak to six. With the loss, the Highlanders fall to 17-19 overall and they have now dropped five consecutive games.

The Highlanders got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the top of the sixth inning. The UCR run came on a Phil Holinsworth RBI groundout to the shortstop, which scored Clayton Pestridge, who reached on a fielder's choice, to give UCR an early 1-0 lead.

San Diego answered back in the bottom of the seventh inning, as they scored one run on two hits. With two outs, Connor Joe got things going, as he singled up the middle, and he moved to second on Andrew Daniel's single to left field. Jerod Smith then hit a chopper to the UCR third baseman, and he in turn threw the ball wide, which allowed Smith to safely reach first, and Joe to score from second, to move the score to 1-1.

UCR then regained the lead in the top of the eighth, as they scored one run on Nick Vilter RBI sacrifice fly, moving the score to 2-1. USD then evened the score up in the bottom of the eighth on a Haupt bases-loaded walk to set up the exciting 11th inning heroics.

 

 

Offensively for the Toreros, Joe led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Haunt went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Troy Conyers (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 0.1 innings of work. UCR's Cody Regina (0-1) was saddled with the loss as he allowed one run on one hit in 1.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. game at UC Santa Barbara.
