FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team held on to claim a 6-5 win over Cal State Fullerton Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Goodwin Field.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 29-16 overall, and have swept the season series with the Titans for the first time in program history. With the loss, the Titans fall to 21-18.
The Titans got on the scoreboard first as they pushed across one run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Fullerton run came on a Davis Olmedo-Barrera RBI single, which scored Matt Chapman, who had doubled, to give CSF a 1-0 lead.
After the Titans scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third, the Toreros broke-up the no-hit bid in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits. Conner Joe led off the frame getting hit by a pitch, and he moved to third on a Louie Lechich single through the right side, which was first Torero hit. Jesse Jenner then made contact on a check swing, which dribbled to the pitcher, and he committed a fielding error to allow Jenner to reach first, Lechich to move to second, and Joe scored. Josh Goossen-Brown then singled to right field, scoring Lechich and moving Jenner to third. Kyle Holder then reached on a sacrifice bunt, which scored Jenner for the third run. Holder then stole second, and came home on a Ben Wylly RBI double to right centerfield, to give USD a 4-2 lead.
The Toreros then added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on two hits. The Torero runs came on an Andrew Daniel RBI single, and a Fullerton fielding error, to move the score to 6-2.
The Titans slowly began to chip away at the lead, scoring one run in the each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, to pull to within one run at 6-5. Then in the bottom of the ninth, Fullerton had a runner at second, and AJ Kennedy laced a double down in the left field corner, and then the defensive play of the season happened. Bailey grabbed the ball, hit Holder for the cut off, and Holder turned and launched a strike to the plate, where Jenner caught the ball and had a collision with Clay Williamson. Jenner held onto the ball, preventing the tying from from scoring. USD then got the next batter to ground out to the first baseman, lifting USD to victory.
Offensively for the Toreros, Joe led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Bailey also had a great day at the plate, as he went 2-for-5 with one run scored.
Drew Jacobs (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on one hit in 2.1 innings of work. Goossen-Brown picked up his fifth save of the season, as he allowed no runs on two hits in 2.0 innings of work. CSF's starter, Phil Bickford (3-3), was saddled with the loss for the Titans, as he allowed six runs, three earned, on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Wednesday, as they host San Diego Christian College in a 6 p.m. game at Fowler Park.
