MORAGA, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team scored six unanswered runs to claim an 8-2 West Coast Conference win over Saint Mary's College Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 14-26 overall, move to 5-6 in the WCC, claim the three-game series with the Gales and they run their season-high winning streak to four games. With the loss, the Gales fall to 17-20 overall and fall to 5-5 in the WCC.
For a second consecutive day, the Toreros got on the scoreboard early as they pushed across two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Kris Bryant got things going as he singled to right field, and he scored on Zack Kometani's run-scoring double. On the same play, Kometani was able to come all the way around and score as the SMC right fielder committed an error, which gave USD a 2-0 lead.
The Gaels then came back and tied the game in the bottom of the third inning as they took advantage of a USD miscue, to score a pair of unearned runs. The SMC runs came on a pair of wild pitches, which scored Michael Gastelum, who reached on an error, and Justin Fazio, who doubled, to move the score to 2-2.
San Diego wasted no time in responding as they regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring one run on one hit. Kometani led off the frame with a walk and Corey LeVier moved him to second on a single to centerfield. Kalei Hanawahine then reached on a fielder's choice, with Levier being thrown out at second, and Kometani reached third, and he would then score on an error by the Gales to give USD a 3-2 lead.
The Toreros then went on to score two runs in both the fifth and eighth innings, and one more in the seventh inning to put the game at its final of 8-2.
Kometani led the USD offense for a second consecutive day, as he went 2-for4 with two double and two RBI. LeVier and Hanawahine also had productive days at the plate as they both went 3-for-5 with an RBI each.
Chris Jensen (2-6) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed two unearned runs on four hits, while striking out six in 8.0 innings of work. Martin Agosta (4-5) was saddled with the loss for the Gaels as he allowed six runs, four earned, on nine hits in 9.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they conclude the three-game series with the Gales at 1 p.m.
