MORAGA, Calif. -The University of San Diego baseball team scored four unanswered runs to claim a 10-7 West Coast Conference win over Saint Mary's College Friday afternoon in the series opener at Louis Guisto Field.

The Gaels (17-28, 8-8 WCC) managed to rally back and claim a 7-6 lead with a three-run bottom of the seventh inning, but the Torero never panicked, as they went to work in the top of the eighth inning. Louie Lechich got things started when he reached on an error. Lechich then stole second and Austin Bailey drew a walk. Two batters later, Connor Joehit a double to left field, scoring both runners to give USD back the lead at 8-7.

The Toreros (27-18, 11-8 WCC) then added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. With one out, Austin Green got things started, as he singled up the middle. AJ Robinsonthen drew a walk, and two batters later, Lechich was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Bailey made them pay, as he hit a two-run single up the middle to put the game at its final of 10-7.

Offensively for the Toreros, Joe led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, and Green also had a good day as he went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. As a team, the Toreros pounded out 14 hits.

Max MacNabb (4-3) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 0.1 innings of work. Michael Wagner came on and picked up his first save of the season, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 2.0 innings of work. SMC's Patrick Keane (1-5) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Gaels, as he allowed two runs on one hit in 1.0 innings of work.


 

 

The Toreros wasted no time in scoring, as they put up four runs in the top of the first inning. Lucas Hagberg led off the frame with a solo home run to left field. Kris Bryant then reached on an error, and Joe singled to left field, moving Bryant to second. Andrew Daniel then loaded the bases when he reached on a bunt, and Green singled in the next two runs. Robinson then reached on a fielder's choice, and Chris Woolley capped the scoring for the inning, as he singled in Joe to give the Toreros an early 4-0 lead.

SMC then took back a run in the bottom of the second inning, when Ricky Boas grounded into a double play, scoring Collin Ferguson, who had walked, to move the score to 4-1.

After the Gaels took back another run in the bottom of the third inning, USD would erase that run with run of their own in the top of the fourth inning. The USD run came on a Joe RBI single, which scored Bryant, who was hit by a pitch, to move the score to 5-2.

The Gaels then scored two runs in the fifth, and three in the seventh, while USD would score one in the fourth and one in the fifth to round off the scoring for the day.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m., as they resume this WCC series with the Gaels.
