MORAGA, Calif. -The University of San Diego baseball team claimed its third West Coast Conference series of the season with a 6-3 WCC win over Saint Mary's College Saturday afternoon at Louie Guisto Field.
For the second consecutive day, the Toreros (28-19, 12-8 WCC) found themselves having to score runs late to take home the victory. After SMC (17-29, 8-9 WCC) had pulled to within one at 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, San Diego had to once again find offense in the ninth, as they did just that. Lucas Hagberg led off the inning with a single, and the next batter, Kris Bryant, then launched his nation's-best 24th home run of the season, a two-run blast to left centerfield to put the game at its final of 6-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bryant led the way, as he went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Louie Lechichalso had a good day, as he went 2-for-4.
PJ Conlon (8-0) had another solid day on the mound for the Toreros, as he picked up the win going 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out six. Michael Wagner then came on and picked up his second save in as many days, as he allowed no runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of work. SMC's Cornish (2-5) was saddled with the loss for the Gaels, as he allowed two runs on one hit in 0.1 innings of work.
The Gels managed to get on the scoreboard first today, as they scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. The SMC runs came on Brendon Kalfus 2-run homer to give the home team the early momentum.
USD then cut the lead in half in the top of the second inning, as they scored one run on an AJ Robinson RBI groundout to the second baseman, which allowed Dillon Haupt, who had singled, to score and move the score to 2-1.
The Toreros then evened the score in the fourth inning as they scored on a bases-loaded balk, and USD took the lead in the eighth on an Austin Green2-run single. The Gaels would then score one run in the bottom of the eighth to cap their scoring for the day.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday at 12 p.m., as they look to complete a sweep this WCC series with the Gaels.
