MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's College Gaels avoided a sweep by the University of San Diego baseball team as a Ricky Boas RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Gaels the 7-6 West Coast Conference win at Louis Guisto Field.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 28-20 overall and 12-9 in the WCC, but the Toreros did claim the series by winning both Friday's and Saturday's match-ups. With the win, the Gaels improve to 18-29 overall and 9-9 in the WCC.
With the Toreros trailing 6-4 heading into the top of the ninth, they once again were looking for late inning heroics, and got the offensive part of it. AJ Robinson got things started, as he hit a one-out single through the right side. Logan Davis then hit a single through the right side to move Robinson to second. After both players advanced a base on a wild pitch, Austin Bailey hit a two-run single through the right side to tie up the game at 6-all.
Then in the bottom half of the ninth inning, the Gaels led off with a double, and a single. Then after USD got the next batter to groundout to the shortstop, Boas stepped to the plate and snuck a ball through the right side to give the Gaels the victory at 7-6.
Offensively for the Toreros, Robinson led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a double, and one run scored.
Louie Lechich (1-3) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros on the mound as he allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in 1.0 innings of work. SMC's Kelsey Outram (2-6) picked up the win in the mound for the Gaels as he allowed two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings of work.
The Gaels got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The SMC runs came on a Colin Ferguson two-run double and an Anthony Villa RBI ground out to give the home team the early 3-0 lead.
USD finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Louie Lechich got things started, as he singled through the left side. Lucas Hagberg then doubled down the left field line, moving Lechich to third. Kris Bryant was then intentionally walked to load the bases, and SMC starting pitcher, Ryan Brockett, then threw a wild pitch, which scored Lechich to move the score to 3-1.
SMC would however score one run in each of the fifth, sixth and eighth innings, while USD scored three in the eighth inning to round off the scoring for the day.
The Toreros will return to action on Monday, as they head to Las Vegas to talk on UNLV in a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
