MORAGA, Calif. -- The USD baseball team (29-14-1, 15-7) won game one of their series at Saint Mary's 8-2 Friday afternoon. Nick Sprengel continued his stellar season, pitching 7.1 strong innings, while Roman Garcia powered the Torero offense with four RBI on three hits.
The Toreros tallied 14 hits with nine of them coming with two outs. Roman Garcia got the scoring started for the Toreros in the third inning when he blasted a two run homer to left field to give USD a 2-0 lead. It was Garcia's 11th homer of the year, which ties him with Riley Adams for the most in the WCC.
Garcia struck again in the fifth. With runners on first and second, he doubled to left field to score Jay Schuyler, who has reached base in 29 straight games. Garcia now has 19 doubles on the year, which leads the conference and is top 15 in the nation.
The Gaels scored their first run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Brett Rasso hit a low line drive to right field. Hunter Mercado-Hood dove for the ball, but it skipped under him, allowing Rasso to coast into third with a triple. Rasso would score during the next at-bat on a wild pitch.
The Toreros added two more in the sixth. One when Paul Kunst scored on a wild pitch and another when Riley Adams brought Mercado-Hood in with a single to right. Adams was one of three Toreros with three hits on the day; joining Garcia and Waltner.
Garcia notched his fourth RBI of the day when he knocked in Mercado-Hood in the eighth inning. Sean Barry allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth, coming on an Eddie Haus RBI single.
The Toreros have now won 11 of Nick Sprengel's (8-1) 12 starts. The sophomore lefty pitched 7.1 innings, allowing just one run and scattering six hits.
Freshman Chris Murphy gets the start for the Toreros in game two Saturday. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
