MORAGA, Calif. – The USD baseball team (29-15-1, 15-8) lost game two at Saint Mary’s 8-1 Saturday afternoon. The Gaels jumped on Torero starter Chris Murphy for three runs in the first inning while the Toreros could only muster one run off Saint Mary’s Jake Valdez.
Chris Murphy struck out the first two hitters he faced, but then gave up three straight doubles and a single, allowing the Gaels to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The Toreros got their lone run in the top of the fourth on a Roman Garcia opposite field solo home run. Garcia’s 12 home runs on the season lead the team and WCC.
After Murphy walked back-to-back batters in the fourth inning, he was pulled for Carl Burdick, who gave up an RBI single and sacrifice fly, which put the Gaels up 5-1.
Saint Mary’s would add two more runs the following inning, scoring one on a failed pickoff attempt and another on a sacrifice bunt. In the sixth, the Gaels tacked on another run after taking advantage of a Torero throwing error.
The Toreros were just 3-for-15 (.200) with runners on and left eight on base.
Murphy falls to 3-3 after allowing five runs and walking four in 3.1 innings (88 pitches). Carl Burdick gave up two runs on four hits in his 1.2 innings. Freshman Louis Crow pitched the final three innings and didn’t allow an earned run, lowering his ERA on the season to 3.54.
The Toreros and Gaels square off in the rubber match Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Paul Richan (4-1, 3.02 ERA) gets the start for the Toreros.
