IRVINE, Calif. -- The USD baseball team (30-16-1) outlasted UC Irvine 5-1 in 14 innings Tuesday evening. The two teams were stuck in a 1-1 tie until the Toreros erupted for four runs in the top of the 14th inning. Sean Barry and Troy Conyers combined to hold the Anteaters to three hits and no runs through the first 8.2 innings. The Toreros were one strike away from a 1-0 shutout, but then UC Irvine's Ryan Fitzpatrick hit a game-tying solo home run down the left field line.
In a game that lasted nearly five hours, Five Torero pitchers combined to hold the Anteaters to one run on six hits over 14 innings. USD struck out 18 batters and walked just three. Jeff Houghtby and Noah Prewett combined to go 7-for-9 with three doubles and four RBI.
After being held hitless through the first four innings, the Toreros got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Colton Waltner and Chris McCready drew walks and then Jeff Houghtby hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Waltner.
Entering the ninth inning, the Anteaters had just two hits. Conyers then began the inning by striking out the first two batters. Ryan Fitzpatrick then worked a full count before hitting the game-tying home run down the left field line.
In extra innings, the Toreros had stranded two runners on base in the 10th and the 11th inning, but their offense broke through in the 14th inning when they scored four runs on three hits. Jonathan Teaney got things going by drawing a walk in his first at-bat of the season. The next batter, Colton Waltner, also walked and then Brhet Bewley singled up the middle to score Teaney. Jeff Houghtby notched his fourth hit of the day when he doubled down the right field line. Noah Prewett then put the game out of reach with a two-run single up the middle. Prewett finished 3-for-3 on the night.
The two teams combined to go 4-for-29 with runners in scoring position and 8-for-45 with runners on base.
In his first start of the year, Sean Barry allowed just one hit in four innings. Troy Conyers then pitched a season-high five innings where he gave up just one run on three hits and struck out eight while walking none. Louis Crow pitched the next 2.1 innings, extending his scoreless inning streak to 13.2 innings. Nick Sprengel, the Toreros' Friday starter, got the final two outs of the 12th inning before giving way to Jonathan Teaney, who earned the win after pitching two scoreless innings.
The Toreros return to Fowler Park this weekend when they host Sacramento State for a three game series beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m.
