SAN DIEGO – The USD Toreros dropped a 9-8 contest to Sacramento State today at Fowler Park to close out the three-game weekend series. Despite a 6-run sixth inning that gave USD a 7-4 lead, the Toreros weren’t able to close out the game. Riley Adams and Roman Garcia each hit their 13th home runs of the season and Aidan Stinnett went 3-for-3 at the plate. Adams and Jeff Houghtby each contributed 3 RBIs.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Colton Waltner opend with a walk and moved to third on a single to left by Aidan Stinnett. Jeff Houghtby then laid down a perfect bunt for an infield single that plated Waltner. Sac State evened the score in the top of the third when Vinny Esposito knocked in Ian Dawkins with an RBI single off of starter Sean Barry.
The Hornets would open the 4th with back-to-back doubles from Kody Reynolds and Devin Lehman to go up 2-1. With one out Barry was replaced by Louis Crow. PJ Floyd followed with a looping single to right to score Lehman from third for a 3-1 lead. Crow would then get out of the inning by getting Raul Ortiz to hit into a double play. Sac State would add a run in the 5th when Kody Reynolds hit a hard shot past Stinnett at third for a double that scored Trent Goodrich. With runners on every base, Crow would strike out Kody Gardner to end the inning.
Riley Adams blasted his 13th home run of the season, a 3-run shot, off of reliever Tanner Olson to knot the score at 4-all. He knocked in Hunter Mercado-Hood and Jay Schuyler, both who had reached on walks. Following a Garcia strikeout, Colton Waltner, Kevin Collard and Aidan Stinnett hit consecutive singles to give the Toreros a 5-4 lead. Jeff Houghtby then hit a double down the right field line to plate Collard and Stinnett to help USD take control of the game again at 7-4. In the big 5th inning the Toreros sent 10 batters to the plate with a total of 5 hits and 6 runs.
Hornets’ leadoff hitter Ian Dawkins hit a two-out homer to left in the 6th to get within 7-5. They would add two more runs with a 2-run double from James Outman to tie the game at 7-all. Vinny Esposito would blast a 2-run homer in the 8th off of reliever Chris Murphy to take a 9-7 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Noah Prewett reached first via a walk but Jay Schuyler’s rocket line drive to right doubled Prewett off at first to end the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the 9th Roman Garcia hit his 13th home run of the year to left field to pull the Toreros to within 9-8, but Austin Root got the final two outs to earn his first save of the season. Chad Perry (1-2) picked up the win for the Hornets while Chris Murphy (3-4) took the loss. Sac State was paced by Vinny Esposito (3-for5, 2 runs, 3 RBIs).
The Toreros (32-17-1) play at San Diego State this Tuesday, May 16th, at 6:00 p.m. before returning to close out their regular-season schedule with a key three-game WCC series with Pepperdine (May 19-21).
