SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Junior designated hitter Ryan Kirby’s walk-off 2-run homer in the 10th inning lifted the University of San Diego baseball team to a thrilling 6-4 win over Arizona State University Wednesday evening in a non-conference e game at Fowler Park.
Heading into the bottom of the 10th inning with the score knotted at 4-all, USD put on their rally camps and went to work. Bryson Brigman led off the frame with a single up the middle. Kirby then stepped to the plate, and after a 0-for-4 day, Kirby delivered in a big way, a no doubt home run to right field, to give the Toreros the come-from-behind win.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 26-27 overall, and have completed a season sweep of the Sun Devils. With the loss, ASU falls to 31-18 overall.
The Sun Devils got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to score two runs in the top of the first inning on a Sebastian Zawada 2-run homer over the left field fence. ASU then tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on a David Greer 2-run homer, to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.
San Diego answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Brhet Bewley led off the frame with a stand-up double to right center. Hunter Mercado-Hood was then hit by a pitch, and two batters later, Jerod Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Daniel Gardner then double to left centerfield to score the first two runners. Brigman then capped the scoring for the inning with an RBI single to move the score to 4-3.
USD then evened up the score in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mercado-Hood led off the frame with a walk, and Spencer Dunlap was then hit by a pitch to move Mercado-Hood to second. Smith then laid down a bunt, and he reached on a sacrifice, while Dunlap easily moved to second, and Mercado-Hood moved to third on an error by the ASU third baseman. Two batters later, Brigman hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, which scored Mercado-Hood to tie the game at 4-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Brigman led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.
Nathan Kuchta (3-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 3.0 innings of work. ASU’s Chris Isbell (1-2) was saddled with the loss for the Sun Devils, as he allowed two runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of work.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they resume West Coast Conference play against Gonzaga University. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
