SAN DIEGO -- The USD Toreros earned a 3-1 win over Pepperdine today to improve to 33-18-1 overall and 16-9 in the WCC standings. With the win the Toreros stay in a tie for 4th in the WCC standings with Saint Mary's College. It was USD's pitching down the stretch that played the key role as starter Paul Richan (5-2) and closer Troy Conyers (12th save) retired 16 of the final 18 Waves batters they faced.
Pepperdine got on the scoreboard first in the 4th inning when Torero starter Paul Richan walked Jeremy Goldenetz with two out and the bases loaded. Ben Rodriguez scored from third and the run was unearned since he had reached base on an error. In the bottom of the 4th the Toreros opened the inning with back-to-back singles by Aidan Stinnett and Jeff Houghtby, but would leave the bases loaded with the inning ending with a Jay Schuyler fly out to left field.
The Toreros tied the score at 1-all in the sixth. With one out Paul Kunst singled to center and scored from first on Colton Waltner's double. With Waltner at third the Toreros' Jay Schuyler attempted a suicide squeeze bunt but popped it up to Waves starter Ryan Wilson (2-7) to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 7th Riley Adams opened with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Roman Garcia followed with his team-best 22nd double and 52nd RBI to plate Adams for a 2-1 lead. Brhet Bewley advanced Garcia to third with an infield groundout. Kevin Collard then delivered a pinch hit single to right to plate Garcia to extend USD's lead to 3-1. Paul Kunst would follow with his second consecutive single and both runners would then advance a base on a wild pitch by reliever Kiko Garcia. A walk to Waltner would load the bases but Hunter Mercado-Hood would fly out to left to end the inning.
Senior LHP Troy Conyers entered the game in the 8th for the Toreros to relieve Richan who turned in an outstanding effort. Conyers tallied two strikeouts in faced just three Waves batters in the 8th. He then closed out the game by facing just four batters in the 9th for his 12th save of the season. Richan completed 7 innings while scattering 6 hits and striking out 6 while allowing just one unearned run. Jay Schuyler extended his on-base streak to 37 straight games when he reached base in his first at-bat when he was hit by a pitch. Senior Aidan Stinnett was 2-for-3 at the plate.
These two teams return to Fowler Park Saturday night for game two of the three-game series with first pitch slated for 6:00 pm.
