SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team scored a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning to claim a 6-4 win over Santa Clara University Friday evening in a West Coast Conference game.
After Santa Clara rallied to score a pair of runs in the ninth inning to force extra innings, the Toreros went to work in the top of the 10th inning. With one out, Jon Hotta got things started by being hit by a pitch, and two batters later, Bryan Haar would drive him in with a run-scoring double to right centerfield and he moved to third on the throw, while Hotta came around to score. Tony Strazzara then added to the lead as he hit a RBI single up the middle to score Haar from third to put the game at its final of 6-4.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 20-27 overall, improve to 9-7 in the WCC and run their winning streak to five. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 17-29 overall and fall to 4-12 in the WCC.
The Toreros wasted no time in scoring as they pushed across one run on two hits in the top of the first inning. Kevin Muno led off the game with a double to left field, and he moved to third on Dillon Checkal's infield single. Two batters later, Zack Kometani would drive in Muno with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give USD a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos then responded with scoring one run in their half of the first inning. The SCU run came on a Patrick Terry RBI single, which scored Lucas Herbst, who was hit by a pitch, to even the score at 1-1.
The Broncos would then capture the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, as they scored one run on a Justin Viele RBI single to left field, which scored Terry, who had singled, to give SCU a 2-1 lead.
The Toreros then rallied back in the top of the eighth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Back-to-Back singles by Kris Bryant and Kometani got things started. Each runner then advanced one base on a double steal, and a Scott Schauer RBI groundout to the shortstop pushed across Bryant for the first run of the inning. Haar then kept things rolling with an RBI infield single, which scored Kometani from third. After Haar stole second, Tony Strazzara drove in Haar with a RBI single up the middle to give USD a 4-2 lead.
Santa Clara then rallied back and scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings. The Broncos scored their runs on a Matt Ozanne run-scoring double and a Kyle DeMerritt RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 4-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Haar and Strazzara led the way as they both went 2-for-4 with two RBI each, while Bryant and Muno each went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
James Pazos (2-3) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work. SCU's Paul Twining (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Broncos as he allowed two runs on two hits in 2.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they continue this three-game WCC series with the Broncos.
