LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 21st-ranked Cal Poly Mustangs scored eight unanswered runs to claim a 9-2 decision against the 25th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team Friday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium in the opening game of the UCLA Regional.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 35-24 overall and will move on to Saturday and play the loser of the San Diego State and UCLA game at 2:05 p.m. With the win, the Mustangs improve to 40-17 overall, and will move on to play the winner of the UCLA-SDSU game on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.
The Mustangs got on the scoreboard first, as they scored one run on a solo home run by Brian Mundell in the bottom of the first inning, to give Cal Poly an early 1-0 lead.
The Toreros answered right back in the top of the second inning, by scoring one run on two hits. Connor Joe led off the frame with an infield single, and he moved to third on an Austin Green single through the right side. Andrew Daniel then drove in Joe as he grounded into a double play to even the score at 1-1.
San Diego then took the lead in the top of the fourth inning, as they scored one run on three hits. With two outs, Green got things going as he laced a single to right centerfield, and moved to second on a fielding error by the centerfielder. Andrew Daniel then singled through the left side to score Green from second, and gave USD a 2-1 lead.
The Mustangs then regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, as they scored a pair of runs. The runs came on a Denver Chaves RBI single and a Mundell RBI sacrifice fly to left field to move the score to 3-2 in favor of the Mustangs.
Cal Poly then scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open the game and take a 9-2 lead.
Offensively for the Toreros, both Joe and Green led the way, as they went 2-for-4 with one run scored a piece.
PJ Conlon (9-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. Cal Poly's Joey Wagman (13-3) picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs, as he allowed two runs on six hits in 8.0 innings of work.
