Toreros have great Season in MLB
Feb. 2, 2017

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego baseball team had a few alumni have an incredible season in the Major Leagues this past season, highlighted by 2013 alum Kris Bryant, being named the National League MVP, as well as winning a World Series Championship with the Chicago Cubs. USD also has AJ Griffin and Sammy Solis make playoff appearances with the Rangers and Nationals respectfully.

Bryant won 29 out of the 30 first-place votes for the NL MVP award, and he became just the fourth player in MLB history to follow up a Rookie of the Year award with the MVP award, joining Cal Ripken Jr., Ryan Howard, and Dustin Pedroia in that exclusive club. On the year, Bryant was also one of the league’s most feared sluggers, batting .292 with 39 homers, 102 RBI and a .939 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. Bryant made remarkable strikes from his outstanding debut season, reducing his strikeouts from 199 to 154 and raising his OPS by 81 points.

Bryant was a two-time West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Year, a three-time first-team All-WCC selection, and helped guide the Toreros to the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Regionals. He also helped guide USD to the WCC Tournament title in 2013. In Bryant's final year, he was named the National Player of the Year, took home the Dick Houser Award, as well as the Golden Spikes Award. Bryant left USD as the program's all-time leader in home runs (54), runs scored (154), and total bases (440). He also set the program record for single-season home runs with 31 in his junior year, to lea the nation.

Griffin had a great 2016 season for the Texas Rangers, as he played and started in 23 games. He posted a 7-4 overall record, while recording 107 strikeouts, and only issued 46 walks in 1189.0 innings of work, while bolstering a 5.07 ERA. He helped lead the rangers to an AL West title, and into the playoffs.

In Griffin's final season at USD, the righty was a first-team All-WCC performer after posting a perfect 5-0 record in league games with a 57-13 strikeout to walk ratio and had an ERA of 3.26. Overall, Griffin was 8-3 with a 4.47 ERA and was second on the team in strikeouts with 113. Griffin picked up a win in the Tempe Regional after a dominating performance against Milwaukee in which he allowed no runs on two hits in 5.0 innings of work. Griffin was a four-year member of the Torero baseball program, and has his name in the Torero record books. For single-season record, Griffin is second in relief appearance, making 34 in 2007, and he is second in saves with 14, set in 2008. In the career record section, Griffin is fifth in relief appearances with 71, second in ERA at 2.39, 10th in wins with 23, eighth in overall record at 23-9, and first in saves with 28.

Solis, a 2010 alum, also had a great season, as he spent a few games in the minors, then called up the Nationals, and he didn’t disappoint. Solis recorded a 2-4 record in 37 appearances as a left-handed specialist out of the bullpen. He also posted a 2.41 ERA in his 41.0 innings of work, while recording 47 strikeouts, and issuing 22 walks.

As a Torero, Solis was a three-year member of the team, and had by far his best season in his junior season. In 2010, Solis was a first-team All-WCC performer, and dominated the conference, not losing a game in league action until the final weekend. For WCC games, Solis recorded a 5-1 record and a 2.74 ERA, while striking out 48 batters. Opponents only hit .215 off of the south paw in WCC action. On the season, Solis posted a 9-2 record, struck out 92 batters and posted an ERA of 3.42.
