SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz of the University of San Diego baseball team, garners more individual national accolades. Matusz was named to the National College Baseball Writers Association National Pitcher of the Week.
Matusz, a native of Cave Creek, Ariz., who was already named the National Pitcher of the Week by Collegiate Baseball as well as the WCC Pitcher of the Week, was once again dominant on the mound for the Toreros in Friday's 2-0 series opening win over Wake Forest. He threw a one-hit shutout in seven innings of work, walking three. He also posted 10 strikeouts to move his season total up to 54, the nation's best according to BoydsWorld.com. Matusz has posted three consecutive games of double-digit strikeouts and in his five outings the season, he has posted four double-digit strikeouts.
Matusz and the 16th-ranked Toreros will travel to Riverside later today to take on the 20th-0ranked UC Riverside Highlanders in a 5 p.m. Game at the Riverside Sports Complex.
